Alongside many benefits and privileges, the modern biosphere has also given problems but then, indeed! Opportunities too; for further growths to conquer the world market with all our natural abundances of rosemary’s.
Yes! To an extent, due to threats of side-effects of synthetic products, herbal yields are genuinely gaining popularity in world market. And, if truth be accepted, despite being a fact that India is world’s second largest exporter of herbal medicines after China, and in spite of having abundantly cognizant, India’s share is not still near an adequate amount. As, the number of plant species containing medicinal values are endless here with a known count recorded near 50,000 in numbers and per the unknown data count may cross 60,000 there-at.
While having favourable climatic conditions with varied landscapes, and near 18 thousand seed bearing plants, Indian subcontinent still lacking to provide products in standardized form per the WHO and other statutory guidelines requisite for promoting the products in Western, European or rest of world, as such. This knowledge sharing event, was attended by eminent people from across the world, those came together to discuss the strengthening of traditional medicinal system and its scientific purpose. This programme ‘International Arogya 2017’ was organised in December, 2017, where 1,500 delegates from over 60 countries participated. The event also witnessed a discussion revolving around various topics such as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH).
An agreement has been made with the World Health Organisation (WHO) during this event and our Government is also in talks with other countries like Tajikistan, Israel, Russia, Peru and Tanzania, to promote this cause further. Products and services from over 250 companies that manufacture alternative medicines were showcased in the event. The current valuation of the Indian herbal market is at Rs 5,000 crore with an annual growth of 14 percent.

There is dire need of comprehensive documentation, understanding between the Governments and a kind of willingness in the officials’ sitting on the seats of powers, to earnestly promote this cause of ‘SERVING THE HUMANITY WITH QUALITY’.

Being a native of this place I mean, the state of J&K, duly associated as mentor to BVICed – AMTZ; Then, keeping running down of the IOMPT ____ the information of medicinal plants of things, we should try connecting the dots; while involving various Government and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in conservation of these plants species.

It is to place on records that in Jammu and Kashmir alone; various organizations such as Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu(IIIM-Jammu) (formerly known as RRL, Jammu), Sher-eKashmir Agriculture University of Science and Technology, Jammu and Srinagar, Centre for Biodiversity Studies, BGSB University, Rajouri, University of Kashmir, Srignar, State Forest Research Institute, J&K, Defence Institute of High Altitude Research, Leh and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra and University of Jammu are keenly involved in developing conservation technologies for medicinal plants of the State. This is beside, GMCs of Jammu and Srinagar then, associated hospitals else PG College SKIIMS besides forthcoming AIIMS (1 at Jammu & 1 at Srinagar). And, there is need of determined efforts for promoting mass cultivation of natural herbs in the state followed by obligating a serious research work on further investigations. As according to the World Health Organization (WHO) the present demand for ethno-medicinal plants is approximately US $ 14 billion per year. The demand for medicinal plants based raw materials is increasing at the rate of 15 to 25% annually; the demand for ethno-medicinal plants is likely to increase more in future.
Government of India has launched a scheme known as Jammu and Kashmir Aroma Arogya Gram(JAAG) to encourage the farmers of Jammu and Kashmir to cultivate scientifically tested and commercially beneficial aromatic and medicinal plants in the state so that their socio-economic status can be uplifted. Under this scheme the government’s key R&D body, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is helping the farmers of the state with expert guidance and provide them saplings of as many as nine varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants. Different CSIR institutions like Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu, Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) Lucknow, National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow and North Eastern Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Johart have been associated for the implementation of this scheme in Jammu and Kashmir. The proven agrotechnologies of CSIR institutions have been demonstrated in different areas of J&K. Various medicinal and aromatic plants species such as Lemongrass CKP-25,CPK-F2- 38,Rosa grass RRL(J)CN-5,IIIM(J)JK-10,Mint RRL(J) ML4 and Phalsa IIM(J) Shivalik Berry have been developed that can perform well in the state. It is hoped that entrepreneurship development in this sector will bring prosperity among the farmers of the state. And, at the end of day; an association else presence of industry leaders like AMTZ (if made probable, here) will certainly do the wonders near honourably making this zone of J&K as real PARADISE on the rise with lifesaving herbs like SANJEEVANI BUTTI of RAMAYANA.
